Since its founding in 1988, Bridge Communities has helped more than 850 families successfully cross the bridge from homelessness to self-sufficiency, permanent housing and financial stability
Bridge Communities provides a transitional housing program where families receive free housing for two years.
Volunteer mentors from Program Partners sponsor and assist client families as they work to develop the life-skills necessary for self-sufficiency. Mentors assist families with things such as budget development and savings plan, debt reduction, financial literacy, and emotional support.
In order to help homeless children succeed and break the generational cycle of poverty, Bridge communities provides professional certified teachers to tutor children and offers academic scholarships to college-bound students.
Currently Women Employed is leading the charge for paid sick time and paid family and medical leave in Illinois.
In 2019, Women Employed won a No Salary History bill in Illinois. The bill prohibits employers from asking job applicants for their salary history.
Women Employed played an instrumental role in winning reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers in Illinois. They joined national partners to advance the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act.
Women Employed won a law that will gradually increase Illinois’ minimum wage from $8.25/hour to $15.00/hour by 2025
